Are Rolled Threads Better Than Cut Threads?

Which is the best option for you?

Mechanical fastener production occurs in one of two ways. The fasteners are either rolled or cut. The production process remains the same, whether it’s a rod, headed bolt, or bent bolt.

“Are rolled threads better than cut threads?”. To help you formulate your own opinion about the matter, we’ve included a definition of each way of producing mechanical fasteners. You can then decide which is the best option for you.

To begin, let’s explore the process known as rolling threads. It’s many people’s preferred method of mechanical fastener production.

What are Rolled Threads?

When threads roll from steel, manufacturers complete the process as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. Rather than removing steel by cutting it, they extrude it. It’s what forms the fastener’s threading. To create the bolt, the manufacturer makes it using a round bar that has a reduced diameter. During the manufacturing process, it ‘rolls’ through threading dies, which determine the precise placement of the steel to form the threads.

Now, we’ll discuss cutting threads and why it works for mechanical fastener production.

What are Cut Threads?

Cut threads, which we mentioned above, take the same steel rod and cuts it as opposed to rolling it to create the threads. The process is more laborious and costs significantly more to complete than rolling threads. That’s why some companies prefer rolling the threads as opposed to cutting them.

So, which of the two is the better option? Learn what makes each production process ideal.

Which is Better?

The advantages of rolled threads are that they’re smoother, damage-resistant, lighter and therefore cheaper to create, and faster to produce. Cut thread benefits include fewer limitations, and all specifications are achievable with the manufacturing process. From a production standpoint, rolled threads are better for the bottom line. For the customer who needs a specific length of bolt, however, the best option remains cut threads.
